DIY Sundial

Sundials have been around for centuries and millenniums.

From the ancient times, they have been used to read the time of the day depending on the position of the sun.

This interesting piece of information can be made all the more amusing for kids through this simple DIY activity.

What you need:

  • Air dry clay
  • Pencil
  • Pebbles

Steps:

1.Using a rolling pin, flatten a dough of air dry clay and cut it into a circle. Place a pencil in the center of the flattened clay. Support it with some more clay around it.

2.Place colorful pebbles on the dial as hour marks on a clock.

Now take the sun dial outside and let it dry!

Your sundial is ready to tell you the time! Ask the kids to observe how the shadow of the pencil acts as the hour hand of a regular clock.
