Educational Kits and Tools

As a mother of two young kids, I swear by the idea of ‘learning by doing’. In our home, we’re always conducting some exciting educational activities and experiments.  Safe to say, get up and get creative is my motto! I personally believe, both kids and adults should keep the spirit of exploration alive and kicking, at all times.

In the case of kids, their world is absolutely amusing, isn’t it? Gets me thinking, if I had even a percent of all their enthusiasm and curiosity, I’d easily accomplish all my pending tasks and still have the drive to work some more! However, at times it does feel like their lives get almost too caught up around school and studies, doesn’t it? You know, when the routine becomes all about those heavy books and running last minute errands, that are, of course, bundles of home assignments! Then how do you help to keep up their interest in studies, and in everyday life, in general, so none of it feels dragged and monotonous?

We can all agree when I say that most children find classroom teaching exceedingly boring. Is that a cry for help? Yes, indeed. Can we adopt effective ways to combat this issue? Absolutely. Does this require extreme efforts on the part of the parents? Well, all you really need to do is to create, or maybe just Google, new ways to make learning interesting. You must give them an apt space to exhibit their creative side, because, nothing captures their attention like a good, interactive and visually thrilling pursuit. You can achieve this and more, all while indulging them in ‘educational activities’. This is where the idea of ‘doing’, becomes oh-so-important, instead of just cramming and writing.

Educational activities may include a range of creative play activities and scientific experiments that gives the kids a certain practical experience of the otherwise, dry, theoretical concepts. This learning through experience has proved to be more impactful as kids can retain this knowledge way better.  In contrast, what is learned in theory seems to get stored in short term memory and gets eliminated as soon as the finals week is over!

These varied educational activities and experiments, however, can only be performed with the right kits and tools.

Without the right equipment, these educational endeavors can turn out to be a complete disaster. Hence, every experiment, as you may recall from the good old school days, began with aim and objectives followed by ‘what you need’ or the materials required. Clearly, kits and tools have quite a role to play in bringing all our monolithic, and megalithic, scientific and creative ambitions to success. When this success is met, it tends to inspire and rejuvenate the idea of creative science learning. Who doesn’t want their child to be scientifically literate, but also unapologetically imaginative? I know I do! After all, innovations are products of imagination. Who knows, one of us might be raising a mini Picasso, unaware.

Interestingly, this Picasso needn’t only be artistically oriented, loathing science, because now he can get his creativity going through the many new ideas of engaging activities and experiments, that easily combine both the subjects! You as the parent must nurture this talent as well as get educational with it. So, celebrate the success of those scientific and creative ventures that you introduce to your little ones, that all come to pass with the right set of tools and equipment!

This brings me to the fact that all these educational kits and tools undergo intense safety checking, and are listed in activities and experiments that you may find in books or on the internet, only when they pass the safety tests and are deemed to be most suitable to achieve the desired result. So you know your little munchkins are safe, and there is no reason to hold them back from exploring the science and art dualism operating in these activities.

Also, did I mention, at times, using unlisted substitute tools and kits can ruin the results?! In our home, we always prefer to follow the protocol, unless we cannot find any of the materials required, anywhere. In that case, we look for the closest possible substitute. The reason is, if we’re going to perform an educational activity, then the learning outcome must be maximized by ensuring accurate or nearing to accurate results! Isn’t it a valid take on this? Beakers, flasks, safety glasses and even glue gun are some of the basic and essential educational tools, that you won’t regret investing in.

Recently, I bought handy scoopers, or scooping scissors, as some may prefer calling it, online. They not only accomplish the desired task in the activities wherein they are used but also come in assorted colors, making them all the more attractive! They provide for some good catch and release fun, that the kids can’t get enough of.

Children who are exposed to these kits and tools early on, do not face extreme difficulties in handling the same tools, or even more complex ones, in school. Also, kids do have great retention power. These practical, but fun ways of learning by doing, while handling all the tools on their own, are sure to teach a lot, and these lessons might stay with them much longer than just theory based knowledge.

The importance of the right educational tools and kits may often get neglected or awarded a secondary position while discussing important teaching and learning techniques. However, they occupy an unmatched spot in bringing these very techniques to life!
