Put Out that Fire

Teaching kids about science may not always be the easiest task in the world, but you can try incorporating some fun and engaging activities to make learning exciting! Literally making teaching a child’s play!

Today we are trying a new experiment we call, “Put out that fire”, and learning some basics of combustion.

Combustion, as we know it, is a chemical reaction that occurs when heat, oxygen and fuel are present.

Here’s what you need:

     –  ½ cup Vinegar (any kind will work)

     –  1-2 tbsp Baking Soda

     –  Candle

     –  Matches

Steps:

1. Place baking soda in a glass or a cup

2. Light the candle and place it carefully on top of the baking soda

3. Quickly add the vinegar drop by drop using a dropper. You can place one hand on the top of the cup to keep the gas from escaping.

As you slowly pour the vinegar over the baking soda, you will see the flames extinguishing!

While performing this experiment kids will certainly question the phenomenon. The reason why this happens is because the baking soda and vinegar together create a chemical reaction for CO2 gas which pushes the oxygen away from around the candle causing the flame to extinguish!

With some basic kitchen supplies and a some science at play, this activity could be a fun but intriguing chemistry investigation for your budding young scientists.
