Vanishing ghosts

Halloween is almost here, and we’re experimenting with mini ghosts!

Try this experiment for an exciting learning outcome alongside a whole lot of fun!

What you need:

  • Tea bags
  • Marker
  • Lighter

Steps:

  1. Take some tea bags and unfold and empty them. Use a marker to draw faces on them.
  1. Use a lighter and light up the tea bags and observe what happens, from a safe distance.

In a few seconds the tea bags will turn to ashes and start floating in the air like small fireballs!

When the cylindrically placed tea bag is lit, the air in it heats up and the warmer air molecules move over the cooler molecules. The ashes of the tea bag rises with this heated air.

Within seconds the tea bags disappear into thin air, making it quite a spooky site if you ask us!

Note: Parental supervision is required for this experiment.
