The Dancing Giraffe

Recently, we did a book review of “Giraffe’s Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae” and we were massively inspired by the touching tale of the character, Gerald The Giraffe from the book. With the inspiration, we thought of creating our own dancing giraffe along with the kids.

What You Need:

  • A sheet of colored paper, preferably yellow for the giraffe
  • Scissor
  • Glue
  • Kitchen Roll
  • A String or a Cotton Twine

Step 1

Take a sheet of colored paper and cut strips from it.

Step 2

Stick the strips at one end together to form a triangle using a glue. Turn it over, on top of another and keep on folding till you reach the end.

Step 3

For creating the neck of the giraffe, we had stuck 3 strips of folded paper together.

Step 4

For creating the legs, we used two folded papers.

Step 5

For creating the ears of the giraffe, we have used one folded paper.

Step 6

Take a kitchen roll and cut it in three folds and 1/4th in size.

Step 7

Paint the kitchen roll with yellow color and stick some brown spots on the kitchen roll to make the body of the giraffe.

Step 8

Take the smaller kitchen roll which is required for the face of a giraffe and stick the googly eyes on it along with the ears.

Step 9

Stick the face of the giraffe with the long kitchen roll that is the body. Further, use the other folded papers and stick them to the body as legs.

Step 10

Use some strings to hold the giraffe like a puppet. You need to tie a string on the head and the front and the back of the giraffe’s body (You can also use a cotton twine to use as the string).

Viola! Your dancing giraffe is all set and ready. Just hold it up and make your dancing giraffe move.

What a fun activity and something that the kids would be able to create and and play with. It is quite simple and the creativity of your child hits another level altogether. Hope you too would have as much fun doing this activity as much as I did with my kids.
