Layers of the Ocean – Density Experiment

Learning layers of the ocean just got more exciting with our fun density experiment!

Now teach your kids about the concept of density while also introducing them to some interesting ocean geography facts!

We have used:

▪ Corn syrup (You can also use honey or maple syrup)

▪ Dish soap

▪ Water

▪ Oil, and

▪ Rubbing alcohol

▪ A bottle

1.Add some coloring to corn syrup, dish soap and water.

2.Add the content to the bottle in the following order:

corn syrup, dish, water, oil and rubbing alcohol

Ask the kids to note their observations.

The denser liquids will settle at the bottom, while the ones with lower density will lie above them!

Use this experiment to talk about the sunlight, twilight, midnight, abyssal zones of the ocean and also the mariana trench!
