Who doesn’t like the winter season? All cozy and warm with some hot chocolate right? And, as much as we love winter, we love snow. It’s winter and we are hugely missing snow.
Boys were very intrigued by the winter season and how a snowstorm happens. And, that is how we came up with this activity.
Snowstorms are usually caused by rising moist air within an extratropical cyclone (low-pressure area). The cyclone forces a relatively warm, moist air mass up and over a cold air mass. If the air near the surface is not sufficiently cold over a deep enough layer, the snow will fall as rain instead. We tried replicating how it might look like in a jar.
So, let’s dig into the blog and grab everything you would need for this activity, and let us get started?
What all you would need:
Fevicryl glue
Spoon
Medium bowl
Jar
Expired Baby Oil
Alka Seltzer ( effervescent tablet )
Method:
Mix some glue with water in a bowl using a spoon
Pour this mixture in the jar and put in SECRET INGREDIENT
Fill the jar slowly with expired baby oil. (We’ve used our expired baby oil as it’s clear and gave us a better view.)
Drop in the Alka Seltzer tablet inside the jar
Watch as the snowstorm begins to form inside the jar
Drop some color to make a colorful snowstorm. (We’ve mixed water and color that goes at the bottom of the jar (full only less than 1/4th of the jar)
Drop some more Alka Seltzer tablets to brew a bigger storm(You can use an effervescent tablet that fizzes any oil).
Enjoy the colorful snowstorm with your kids!
You can do this experiment as many times as you want to. Just don’t throw the oil and the oil and water will separate and become the same as before the experiment.
