Following our festive theme, we decided to try out an absolutely safe firecracker experiment!
What you need:
- Fire safe mold
- Sand
- Baking soda
- Powdered sugar
- Sanitizer
- Lighter
Steps:
- 1.Mix some powdered sugar with baking soda.
- 2.Place some sand in a fire safe mold and pour a bit of sanitizer and the powdered sugar and baking soda mixture on it.
- 3.Carefully light up the sand using a lighter.
Make sure your baking soda and powdered sugar are in the ratio of 1:4. So for 1 spoon of baking soda there has to be four spoons of powdered sugar. Mix it really well before you pour it.
We tried this with sanitizer and rubbing alcohol. Though the rubbing alcohol had better effect, you can use liquid sanitizer too or any liquid that burns!
This experiment works because when the baking soda gets hot, it makes carbon dioxide gas. The pressure from this gas pushes the carbonate from the burning sugar out, producing the snake reminiscent of popular fireworks!
This activity requires parental supervision.
