Electric Play Doh Science for Pre-schoolers – Ages 5 and Up

Do you remember the play doh we made this week? The good news is that it’s a great conductor of electricity because of two secret ingredients which we will reveal right after discussing how important it is to introduce electronics to children (even pre-schoolers) through practical examples.

What you need is:

  • play doh made with 1 cup of salt and lemon juice (important for acting as conductors of electricity)
  • Battery pack
  • Batteries
  • Light emitting diodes (LEDS)

Steps:

  • Have the child place a wire into two pieces of the play doh acting as electricity conductors
  • Make sure the doughs do not touch
  • Now let the child place a wire from the LED light into each piece of dough
  • Now ask the child to bring together the two pieces of dough and then move them away and see the magic happen

Talking about practical examples, we wanted to make it interactive and this is a great way to teach kids how to create short circuits and about electricity.

When the LED light doesn’t light up just change direction as LED lights allow the flow of electricity only in one direction.
