A simple chemistry experiment can teach a lot about physics too!
We tried the classic Alka Seltzer fizz experiment to start a discussion on sound and vibrations.
What you need:
– Film canister or any soft closing lid bottle
– Water
– Alka Seltzer tablet
– Color
Steps:
1. Take an Alka Seltzer tablet, break it and place it in the canister.
2. Pour some water in the canister filling upto 25% of it.
3. Close the lid tightly and watch how long does it take for the reaction to take place.
The science working behind this experiment is that the carbon dioxide gas builds up so much pressure inside the closed film canister that the lid pops off and makes a loud noise.
With regard to the topic of sound and vibration, use this experiment to discuss the pitch of the sound produced and how the waves would travel.
