Bloody Hands Experiment

Spooky season can be explored through a scientific lens, and guess what? It’s even more fun!

Here’s a simple experiment that will take the kids by surprise!

What you need:

  • Turmeric
  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • A plain sheet of paper
  • Paintbrush

Steps:

  1. Mix some turmeric with water and use a paintbrush to apply it on a plain sheet of paper
  • Mix some baking soda with water and apply it on your palms
  • Place your palms on the sheet of paper and observe what happens

As the baking soda hits the surface of the sheet covered in turmeric, the color immediately changes from yellow to red!

The reason why it happens is because turmeric is a strong acid base indicator that changes its color to deep red when in contact with a base, such as the baking soda.

Spooky, or a curious case of chemistry? You decide!
